Mortal remains of former minister SD Khongwir laid to rest at Mawlai Presbyterian cemetery

Shillong, Nov 24: The mortal remains of former minister and long serving MLA of Mawlai constituency, Standlington David Khongwir, were laid to rest at the Mawlai Presbyterian cemetery, Mawlai Nonglum on Friday.

The final rituals for Late Khongwir were conducted by the Presbyterian Church Mawlai, attended by his family members, hundreds of loved ones from across Mawlai constituency, and others from afar.

Incumbent MLA of Mawlai, Brightstarwell Marbaniang, and MDC Teiborlang Pathaw were also present at the funeral ceremony held at Ïew Nonglum, Mawlai.

Former MLA of Mawlai Constituency, SD Khongwir, breathed his last on November 21, 2023 at NEIGRIMHS Hospital at the age of 90. He was suffering from a prolonged illness.

He was one of the most prominent politicians since the time Meghalaya got its Statehood in 1972. He was a respected figure, well-known not only in his constituency but throughout the state. His political journey began with his first electoral victory in 1972 and continued successfully till 1998. He served as the MLA of Mawlai for an impressive 25 years, choosing to retire from politics in 1998 rather than contesting further elections.

During his extensive political career, Khongwir held several significant portfolios, including Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya in governments led by Late Darwin Diengdoh Pugh and Late Brington Buhai Lyngdoh. He also served as the Minister in-charge of various departments and chaired the State Planning Board.

A key figure in regional politics, he was associated with parties such as the Hills State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and was instrumental in the establishment of the United Democratic Party (UDP).

In addition to his political contributions, Khongwir served as the Rangbah Shnong (headman) of Mawlai Nonglum for an impressive 55 years, holding one of the longest tenures as a headman in the Khasi region.
