Tura, Oct 23: The A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) has opposed and condemned the move to relocate the Maternity and Child Hospital (M&CH) from Ampati to Mahendraganj in South West Garo Hills.
In a press statement issued to the media, the General Secretary of AHAM Wester Sangma said that Mahendraganj is far from Ampati and it will pose hurdles as far as the administration is concerned. They also felt that Mahendraganj is close to the international border and is a flood-prone area.
Mahendraganj is about 32 km from Ampati, the district headquarter of South West Garo Hills.
AHAM feels that people will suffer from this move. About 80 percent of the population would be affected if the proposed maternity hospital is shifted to Mahendraganj, opined AHAM.
The total population of South West Garo Hills district is about 183560 in 470 villages with 9 PHC, 2 CHCs, and 1 Civil Hospital.
AHAM remarked that Ampati is the centre point and as such the M&CH must be set up in Ampati or a nearby location for the benefit of the patients. A formal complaint on the matter has been submitted to the Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma through the DC of SWGH.
