Shillong, May 1: In a harrowing incident on Tuesday evening, a massive landslide near the Sonapur tunnel on the Meghalaya side of the Barak-Guwahati national highway left a truck driver and his co-pilot counting their blessings after their vehicle was struck by debris and a giant tree. The duo narrowly escaped with their lives as the landslide caused severe damage to their truck.
Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred on the Lumshnong – Ratacherra stretch when a colossal tree and a significant amount of debris from the surrounding hills came crashing down onto the highway, directly in the path of the moving truck. The impact of the falling debris and the tree left the vehicle mangled. Still, miraculously, the driver and co-pilot managed to emerge from the wreckage relatively unscathed.
The landslide has completely halted traffic movement on the crucial connecting highway, leaving countless vehicles stranded on both sides of the Sonapur tunnel. Authorities have initiated clearing operations to remove debris and fallen trees from the road. Still, the process is expected to take several hours due to the scale of the obstruction.
As a result of the incident, a long queue of vehicles has formed, with commuters facing significant delays and inconvenience. Local authorities have advised travelers to seek alternative routes until the highway is cleared and deemed safe for passage.
The Sonapur tunnel, which serves as a vital link between Barak Valley and Guwahati, has been the site of similar incidents in the past due to the region’s susceptibility to landslides during the monsoon season.
