Agartala, May 1: Tragedy struck the Usha Bazar area of Agartala as Durga Prasanna Deb, popularly known as Viki Deb and serving as the secretary of the esteemed local club Bharat Ratna, was fatally shot in Salbagan, located on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday night. He was also a local leader of the ruling BJP.
The victim was reportedly shot at point-blank range inside a car and met with a tragic demise in an area falling under the jurisdiction of the NCC police station.
Upon receiving reports of the incident, senior police officials swiftly arrived at the scene to initiate investigations into the motive behind the murder.
The body of the deceased has been transported to the morgue of a private hospital in the city.
In light of this unfortunate incident, Dr. Dilip Das, former MLA and prominent BJP leader, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and called for swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Speaking to the media, he said that the police have been given a free hand as the Chief Minister and the state’s Home Minister assured Tripura would be free from drugs and criminals.
He urged police to take prompt action to book the criminals.
The community is left in shock and mourning following the untimely demise of Durga Prasanna Deb, whose contributions to the local club and community will be remembered fondly.
Meantime, Dr Kiren Kumar, Superintendent of Police (SP) West Tripura district said that the incident occured around 8 PM when a masked man came close to the victim’s car and knocked on the window, and as he opened the glass the assilant fired three shots from very close range. Later as the injured was being rushed to hospital. But unfortunately he died on the way.
The SP added that police us conducting raids to nab the culprits.
