Shillong, June 30: Meghalaya Police on Wednesday morning apprehended one person and recovered one Chinese made AK-81 rifle and 36 rounds of AK ammunition in East Garo Hills.
The nabbed person has been identified as one Bersly alias Baley D. Shira.
In a press statement on Wednesday, Superintendent of Police, East Garo Hills, Bruno A. Sangma said Shira was arrested in the wee hours of Wednesday morning from Sampalgre along with the AK-81 rifles and ammunitions from his house after all the inputs were gathered on Tuesday night.
He said the special operation was conducted by the district police led by two senior police officers based on specific information about the presence of a high powered automatic weapon in the possession of an individual in a village close to Williamnagar town of East Garo Hills.
Sampalgre village is located on the other side of the Simsang River towards Durama Hills.
The operation had been in execution for the past couple of weeks based on human intelligence and technical inputs about the possible movement of the weapon by an individual, he informed.
Shira has been taken into custody for interrogation and charged under appropriate sections of law with a case regisrted at Williamnagar Police station.
Police suspect that the weapon belonged to the banned GNLA which was kept hidden by Late Sohan D Shira in a jungle hideout. Although GNLA chief Sohan D Shira died over three years ago, the illegal weapons hidden by him continue to be unearthed in many places along Durama Hills.
