Shillong, July 12: Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jyoitraditya Scindia, on Friday said state leadership in northeast must find a permanent solution to the flood problem and the DoNER ministry can be the facilitator.
Scindia, who was here to review progress of several projects in the northeast here, said at the sidelines of the meeting that solutions to the flood problem in the northeast cannot be a stop gap arrangement.
“I do believe that if we want to look at a solution, it must not be a stop gap intermittent solution. It must be a permanent solution,” Scindia said about the flood problem in the northeast.
Scindia suggested that state governments must try to tackle the flood problem in collaboration with the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Ministry of Environment. “My role is that of a facilitator,” Scindia said.
He said there are some ideas where the state leadership of all eight states hold discussion with these Union Ministries. “This is a discussion that we must have in our forum where the leadership of all eight states sit together so that we can come together and come up with a unified solution,” he said.
He said the Ministry of DoNER can be a facilitator to such a brainstorming session to help the state leadership to come up with the permanent solution to the perennial flood problem in the region.
He reiterated this problem cannot be a stop gap arrangement in which emphasis is on redevelopment of infrastructure affected due to floods.
“This is not a story only about infrastructure. This is not a story about only repairing roads. This is a story about people, and that is the more important aspects,” he said while condoling the lives lost due to flood.
He said all the state leadership be it “Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya or any of our states”, everyone is working “extremely hard to take care” of the citizens.
The Central government and the DoNER Ministry “would be more than happy to come forward,” if any assistance is required in ameliorating the problems of the people affected by flood, Scindia said.
