Tura, March 1: The Department of Agribusiness Management and Food Technology at NEHU, Tura Campus, organised a one-day regional conference on ‘Developmental Paradigms in North-East India: Poverty, Inequality and Food Security’ on Friday.
The conference focused on key developmental challenges in the region, including poverty, socio-economic inequality, and food security.
Prof. Sujata Gurudev, Campus Director of NEHU Tura, presided as the Chief Guest and highlighted the progress in Tura’s development. She also commended the department for its initiatives in rural development.
The Guest of Honour, Prof. B. Mishra, discussed six key paradigms of economic development, including modernization theory, dependency theory, structuralist paradigm and sustainable development, stressing on their impact on both the country and Northeast India.
The keynote speaker, Prof. C.P. Suresh, addressed the issue of malnutrition, advocating for the use of lesser-known indigenous fruits and vegetables of Meghalaya as nutritious alternatives to commonly available produce.
Dr. Raju Sasikumar stressed the need for ensuring food security, while Prof. Deepak Bhagat, Head of the Department, welcomed the dignitaries and reiterated the importance of utilising available resources for regional development.
Dr. Sameer Sarkar from the Department of Business Management, Gauhati University, also attended the event. The conference concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sheena Haorongbam, followed by interactive technical sessions where participants shared their research ideas.
