Shillong, Oct 18: Following stiff pressure from multiple quarters and its own internal disciplinary committee failing to make any headway into the recent ragging incident in its Tura Campus, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has filed a FIR on the incident.
The FIR was filed by NEHU Vice Chancellor on October 14 at Tura Police Station; whereas the incident occurred on October 8, 2023.
This information was disclosed by NEHU authorities during the meeting with Naga Students’ Union Shillong (NSUS), the Angami Elders’ Forum Shillong, the Angami Students Union Shillong, NEHU Students’ Union, and the Naga students of NEHU on October 16, 2023. From NEHU’s side, the representatives included Prof. S.R. Joshi, the Registrar, and Prof. Lucy Zehol, the Chairman of the Fact Finding Committee tasked with investigating the recent incident at NEHU Tura Campus. However, the Vice Chancellor of NEHU was unable to attend, owing to an emergency summon by the Governor of Meghalaya.
It is be mentioned here that FIR into the incident by NEHU was one of the conditions put forth in the charter of demands put forward by the Naga Students’ Union Shillong on October 11, 2023.
A student from Nagaland, pursuing MBA in the Department of Agri Business Management in NEHU’s Tura Campus, was subjected to torturous and humiliating ragging in the wee hours of October 8, 2023, around 1.30 AM to 2 AM. He was made to strip naked and mocked by a group of students, whose identities remain a mystery till date.
Further, based on the demands put forth by the students’ bodies into the ragging incident, NEHU authorities have also furnished an authentic copy of the report compiled by the internal Fact Finding Committee on this case to the family of the victim as well assuring to take appropriate and strict measures based on Anti-Ragging Laws against the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, Naga Students’ Union Shillong have urged NEHU and Tura Police to diligently persevere in their pursuit of this matter, ensuring expeditious resolution.
