Alarming: RDTL Guwahati finds substandard medicines at Civil Hospital Shillong

Shillong, Oct 18: In a shocking finding, the Civil Hospital, Shillong has been found to have procured atleast two medicines that are of substandard quality and unfit for patients.

The findings are based on tests conducted by Guwahati based Regional Drug Testing Laboratory (RDTL) on medicines purchased by the Directorate of Health Services (MI) of Meghalaya.

According to the analytical test reports of the RDTL, the two medicines are: Paracetamol Tablet (Galpara) IP 500mg, Batch No. GPT22002; Manufacturing Date: July 2022; Expiry Date: June 2025; and Vitamin C Tablet (XTRA-C) IP 500mg, Batch No. XTR-2112; Manufacturing Date: October-2021; Expiry Date: September-2025.

According to a report published by news portal Ka Shlem, the authorities at the hospital have been made aware of the findings, and instructions have been given to stop prescribing these medicines. Civil Hospital Shillong (Head Pharmacist), in a letter addressed to all the Nurses in Charge (IPD) at Civil Hospital, has requested the hospital to temporarily stop administering the two medicines to the patients, the report said.

Ka Shlem further reported that the Head Pharmacist’s letter has also been forwarded to the Inspector of Drugs of East Khasi Hills District, the Additional Director of Health Service, Dr. B Lyngdoh (HoD ENT), and to the Nursing Superintendent of Civil Hospital, Shillong.

Recently, there have been a series of reports indicating discrepancies in the procurement of medicines by government hospitals in the state.

Nails found inside medicine 

There was a report on nails found inside a medicine in Pomlum Primary Healthcare Center (PHC).

After examination, it was found that the nail was actually larger than the capsule itself.

Glass shrad found inside cough syrup 

While there was another report of glass shards discovered inside a cough syrup given by Civil Hospital, Nongpoh. This cyrup was prescribed to a six-year-old child.

As a proactive measure to safeguard patients’ well-being, DMHO Ri Bhoi had assured the temporary suspension of the distribution of the cough syrup within the district, pending a decision by the state government.
