Shillong, March 11: North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla has alleged that the ongoing students’ protests at the university are being influenced by individuals with selfish interests rather than genuine student concerns.
In a letter addressed to the students and NEHU Students’ Union members, Prof. Shukla expressed deep concern over the escalating agitation, stating that the movement has shifted away from genuine student issues and is now being manipulated for political and personal gains.
The Vice-Chancellor warned that the continued unrest is putting students’ education and future at risk. “Instead of focusing on your studies, research, and personal growth, you are being misled by people with their own selfish interests,” he wrote, adding that those instigating the protests would not face any consequences, but students would bear the brunt of disrupted academic schedules, reduced job prospects and a tarnished university reputation.
“It is you, the students, who will be affected the most. Your academic schedule has been disrupted, your future job opportunities and higher studies are at risk, and the reputation of your degrees is being damaged,” he pointed out.
He also questioned why the protests had suddenly turned aggressive and why faculty members were facing threats. He pointed out that meaningful discussions had been avoided by those leading the movement, who instead encouraged aggressive demonstrations. “Are you really fighting for a cause that benefits you, or are you being misled? Please reflect. Think about your dreams, your goals, and the sacrifices your families have made for your education. Do not let the ambitions of a few individuals destroy your future, it is time to bring peace back to NEHU,” he added.
Last week, there were reports indicating that Prof. Shukla had resumed work virtually from Delhi. Despite this, he reaffirmed his commitment to dialogue and assured students that he had already taken steps to address some of their concerns, including appointing a Pro Vice-Chancellor. However, he noted that his willingness to find solutions had been met with continued hostility and violence.
“As your Vice-Chancellor, my responsibility is to make NEHU a place where students can grow in a safe and peaceful environment. I urge you to stop engaging in protests led by a few selfish individuals and instead work towards rebuilding the university with wisdom, patience, and mutual respect,” he appealed.
