Shillong, July 14: In the wake of the prolonged ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur, the North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) organized a ‘Peace March’ on the university campus on Friday.
The event aimed to pray for the restoration of peace and normalcy in the troubled state.
Hundreds of students and teaching staff from the university participated in the peace march, holding placards with messages promoting peace, healing, understanding, and tranquillity among the communities. The collective prayers and peaceful demonstration sought an early return to normalcy in Manipur.
Expressing deep concern over the disturbing incidents of violence, Prof. Lakhon Kma, President of NEHUTA, urged for peace and harmony in Manipur. He emphasized the need for the central government to take appropriate measures to prevent further violence between the two communities. As a responsible teachers’ organization, NEHUTA earnestly appealed to all sides to exercise strict restraint and called upon the central government to implement urgent measures to ensure peace and harmony.
Prof. Kma further emphasized the importance of fostering trust and humanitarian values between the Meitei and Kuki communities during this challenging time. He underlined the need for adhering to democratic principles even in crisis situations.
He said the teachers’ association of NEHU will continue to work towards bridging the gap between the victims of both communities, ensuring their voices are heard by the relevant authorities, so their fundamental rights, including the right to life and livelihood, will be protected and above all to restore the right to dignity of victims at any cost.
