Shillong, Jan 24: The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) is once again under scrutiny for alleged medical negligence following the death of a 23-year-old patient being treated at the hospital from unknown causes on January 23.
The family members expressed their discontent with the hospital authorities, citing an operation performed on the patient without obtaining consent or informing them about the nature of the sickness. According to the family, NEIGRIHMS authorities conducted the operation, merely stating that there was an issue in the patient’s intestines.
Subsequently, the patient was allegedly shifted to the ICU room without the knowledge of the family members. They claimed not to have met any doctors from January 17 until January 22. However, on January 23, at around 9:00 p.m., the hospital authority announced that the 23-year-old patient was dead.
The family members accused the hospital staff of neglecting the patient, even though the 23-year-old had complained about not being able to breathe properly. They narrated that the patient had written a letter before passing away, describing all the negligence by the hospital staff and authorities at the ICU.
Adding to the frustration, the family members alleged that after the hospital declared that the 23-year-old was dead, they received only a death certificate with no additional information about the cause of death.
Frustrated and angry family members, in their attempt to meet the hospital superiors to seek clarification, were abruptly stopped at the entrance by hospital guards.
