Shillong, Jan 26: In response to recent news revealing a case of alleged medical negligence at NEIGRIHMS Hospital, resulting in the death of a 23-year-old on Tuesday, Medical Superintendent Prof. C Daniala refuted the allegation on Thursday stating the patient had been suffering from multi-drug resistant tuberculosis for an extended period.
Hospital authorities denied claims of medical negligence, asserting that the patient received continuous monitoring round the clock by the medical staff.
Prof. Daniala also explained that the deceased patient was severely ill, with fluid-filled chest and extensive tuberculosis in her abdomen who also faced bowel obstruction, had a history of heart issues, and underwent a heart operation at the institute in 2017.
Regarding allegations that the patient was not provided with oxygen cylinders, authorities clarified that the institute utilises a central pipeline for oxygen supply, not individual cylinders.
The patient was admitted on January 10 after arriving on January 9, and multiple tests were conducted, all confirming a bowel obstruction.
Previously, the family members of the 23-year-old girl who passed away at NEIGRIHMS on Tuesday night had accused the institute of medical negligence.
Expressing discontent with the hospital authorities, the family alleges that the girl underwent an operation without their consent or information about her illness.
According to them, NEIGRIHMS authorities performed the operation, citing an issue in her intestines. The family claims that post-surgery, the patient was shifted to the ICU without their knowledge, and they had no interaction with doctors from January 17 to 22. Despite the patient complaining about difficulty breathing, she was declared dead around 9 p.m. on January 23 and hence, the family accuses hospital staff of neglect.
