NEIGRIHMS successfully hosts state-level OT nursing workshop

Must read

Shillong, June 29: Over 425 nursing personnel and faculty members from across Meghalaya participated in a two-day intensive workshop on OT Nursing, organized by NEIGRIHMS’ Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Cell on June 27 & 28.

The workshop kicked off with a message from Director in-charge, Dean & HOD Obstetric & Gynae Prof. Dr. A. Santa Singh. He highlighted the critical role nurses play in the often tense and fast-paced environment of the operating theatre. “Nurses are vital members of a multidisciplinary team working with cutting-edge technology,” Dr. Singh stressed. “Staying updated and making quick decisions are crucial in this setting. Proper shift handovers and meticulous instrument counts before and after surgery are essential to prevent errors.”

Dr. C. Daniala, Medical Superintendent, delved into the complexities of advanced surgical techniques. He discussed the use of endoscopic, laparoscopic, and radiological procedures involving C-arm machines, which emit radiation. Dr. Daniala emphasized the importance of safety protocols to protect the health of staff working in operating theatres.

The workshop also featured a keynote address by Dr. V. Connerstone Wann. Dr. Wann emphasized the specialized nature of OT nursing. “Nurses working in the OT require specific training to assist surgeons effectively in their respective specialties,” he explained. “Rotation to other wards may not be feasible due to the advanced skills needed.”

A major highlight of the event was the launch of the “OT Nursing Procedure Manual.” This comprehensive manual, spearheaded by the CNE Cell under the supervision of Chief Nursing Officer R. Khonglah, is a collaborative effort by experienced OT nurses, infection control nurses, and the CNE Cell itself. Led by Irene A. Nongtraw (Nursing Superintendent OT cum CNE Cell Chief Co-ordinator & Chief Editor) and Greenita Syiemlieh (Asst CNE Co-ordinator & Editor), the manual was validated by heads of all surgical disciplines and is grounded in evidence-based research.

The workshop provided participants with in-depth knowledge of essential OT practices. Interactive hands-on activities on both days further enhanced their learning, focusing on nurses’ responsibility to create a safe, patient-cantered surgical environment.

This workshop at NEIGRIHMS serves as a testament to the ongoing commitment to excellence in nursing care. By equipping nurses with the latest knowledge and skills, the CNE Cell is empowering them to deliver the best possible care to patients undergoing surgery.
