Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Goalpara Unit, Garo Jatiya Parishad (GJP), Garo National Union, and GNC have jointly demanded the shutdown of the rehabilitation centre.

In a joint letter to the District Commissioner (DC) of Goalpara District, the groups also demanded that the rehab centre pay compensation to the family members of the victim.

“The deceased leaves behind a four-year-old child and a wife, and was the sole breadwinner of the family. As such, we request appropriate compensation for the family members,” reads the letter to the DC.

It may be mentioned that a total of 8 suspects have been arrested so far by Assam police in connection with the alleged murder of Niksamseng. However, the owner of the New Life De-Addiction Centre, Rakibul Hussain, along with one more inmate, is still absconding.

Niksamseng was allegedly brutally murdered by rehab inmates at the rehab center in Goalpara on July 4. He had been detained there since July 2.

On Tuesday, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma sought the intervention of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for an impartial probe into the alleged murder of the Garo youth.
