Deomali, Feb 9: Deep in the serene hills of Subang village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district lies a mysterious wonder, unknown to much of the world – Nimok Pung, a saltwater well that has been a silent witness to the region’s rich history and culture.
This unique natural phenomenon, perched on a hillock, has been a lifeline for generations of the Nocte tribe. Its water is inexplicably salty, a rarity in a landlocked, mountainous region. But what makes Nimok Pung extraordinary is its cultural significance, woven into the barter economy of days gone by.
Centuries ago, the salt extracted from this well served as a critical commodity. Villagers would process the water using a traditional method known as Sumkoakin Nocte – a term derived from sum (salt) and koak (to extract). The process was labor-intensive, often taking a week or more, but the reward was invaluable. The salt was not just a seasoning but a currency. Locals carried it to neighboring areas, trading it for essentials like lentils and oil.
“This place is sacred to us,” says the Gaon Burah of Subang village, his voice filled with pride. “Our forefathers believed that the salt from this well could ward off diseases. It is not just a resource; it is part of our identity.”
Despite its historical and cultural value, Nimok Pung remains largely unexplored by tourists. Efforts have been initiated by state forest minister Wanki Lowang to spotlight this hidden gem, but the villagers are calling for more concrete measures. They dream of seeing Nimok Pung transformed into a thriving tourist destination, a place where visitors can not only marvel at the natural phenomenon but also learn about the Nocte tribe’s heritage.
For the Nocte people, Nimok Pung is more than a well. It is a link to their ancestors, a symbol of resilience, and a repository of traditions that stand on the brink of being forgotten.
