Silchar, May 6: In a tragic incident, Kesar Pran Deka, a 6th-semester mechanical engineering student at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar, died by suicide on Monday morning.
The 20-year-old student from Changsari, Assam, was found hanging in the bathroom of the NIT guest house, where he was staying with his parents.
According to the police, Deka had been suffering from severe depression. NIT Silchar authorities informed his parents about his condition. His parents were staying with him for the last few days. They were trying to address his mental health issues and convince him to complete his engineering degree despite his reluctance to pursue the course.
Deka was rushed to Silchar Medical College Hospital (SMCH), where he was declared dead on arrival.
This is the second student suicide at NIT Silchar within a year.
Numal Mahatta, SP, Cachar District Police, said, “At around 12:00 PM upon receipt of an information of suicidal hanging case at NIT, Guest House Room No 04, Police team rushed to the spot and found that one NIT student – Kishor Pran Deka -20 years of Borka PS-Changsari, Kamrup (R) committed suicide by hanging inside bathroom. Accordingly, local Executive magistrate was informed. Immediately after the inquest, the body of the deceased was sent to the SMCH, Silchar, for postmortem.”
He added that, during the preliminary investigation, it had come to light that the deceased was suffering from acute depression, and accordingly, his parents were called, and the family was staying at the campus along with the student.
The incident highlights the immense pressure some students face, which can lead to tragic consequences if not properly addressed by families and educational institutions.
