GUWAHATI, July 18: Meghalaya Police on Thursday denied that there was any move from the authorities to restrict tourist vehicles registered outside Meghalaya from visiting tourist spots (except Shillong).
Taking to X, Meghalaya Police wrote: “Fake information circulating about tourist vehicles registered outside Meghalaya being barred from visiting tourist spots(except Shilling)are completely baseless.”
“Do not fall for such misinformation! As of now, there is no such restriction being enforced. Let’s debunk false news and enjoy the beauty of Meghalaya without unnecessary worries!” they added.
Clarifying the issue, Laitylli Tourist Owner and Driver Association general secretary Balajied Jyrwa – told Hub News/ The Meghalayan Express: “It’s not prohibition. Actually, we just wanna follow the Sikkim model for tourist vehicles plying towards tourist spots otherwise they are allowed to come to Shillong except for the tourist spots only local ML vehicles can take tourists to tourist spots.”
“We have just demanded that from the government and nothing like prohibition like that. They can come up to Shillong and from there onwards only local Meghalaya vehicles will take them to tourist spots,” Jyrwa added.
The clarification from Meghalaya Police and Laitylli Tourist Owner and Driver Association came after Guwahati-based Motor Paribahan Sewakarmi Sonmilito Manch (MPSSM) submitted memorandums separately to Meghalaya Chief Minister, Tourism Minister and Chief Secretary urging the authorities not to take any unilateral decision in restricting out-of-the-state vehicles in the sightseeing areas of Meghalaya.
“We have come to know about the memorandum submitted by the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA) for a ban on vehicles from other states from ferrying tourists to Meghalaya’s popular destinations,” the memorandum of MPSSM said.
“We learnt through an electronic media report that the government has organized a review meeting on this matter. We request that no unilateral decision be taken on the topic. We further request that the Meghalaya government ensure the safety and security of the out-of-the-state tourist vehicle drivers and tourists,” the memorandum said.
“We are hopeful that the Meghalaya government will not take any decision that could negatively impact directly or indirectly on the tourism sector (not only cab drivers but hotels, restaurants, guides, vendors, tour operators that are associated with tourism of Meghalaya and brotherly relationship between the two states,” the memorandum added.
