Guwahati, Jan 29: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has clarified that Assam police did not send any spy to the Ulfa (I) camp in Myanmar. A recent video, which went viral, featured a youth identifying himself as Manash Borgohain, a sub-inspector of Assam police, in the custody of the insurgent group. Sarma emphasised that there was no official mission by Assam police to the Ulfa (I) camp.
Reacting to this viral video, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Manash Borgohain is not part of the Assam Police. Borgohain himself has made a statement that he was studying at an institute called ‘Jest’. Even we have cross-checked and found out he is a diploma engineer, and to be a sub-inspector (SI), one has to take an exam, which he has not taken. Hence, I think this is factually incorrect, and Paresh Baruah has a misunderstanding. I will request not to punish the boy.”
On the other hand, Assam police have denied sending any spies to the camp of the banned militant outfit Ulfa-I in Myanmar.
In a statement, the Assam Police categorically stated that they have not sent any spy named Manash Borgohain to the ULFA-I camp. The police also stated that the department did not recruit anyone named Manash Borgohain in the Special Branch of the police in 2021.
The Assam Police clarification comes after the ULFA-I on January 28 released a confessional video of one of its members, suspected of spying.
Recently, many youths from upper Assam have joined the Ulfa-I group.
On the other hand, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed to the youths to return to their homes.
