Williamnagar, April 5: The pressure groups along with the Nokma Association of East Garo Hills held a public meeting at Rongrenggre, Williamnagar on Saturday to show support for the demand to make Tura the Winter Capital of Meghalaya.
The meeting was chaired by Ronald Bryan A. Sangma, Adviser of the A·chik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) Eastern Zone. Mr. Birash Ch. Sangma, Chief Organizing Secretary of ASPF.
Many groups took part in the meeting, including the ASPF, Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Nokma Association, Mothers Union, All India Garo Union (AIGU), A·chik Progressive Approach (APA) and the Garo Hills Enlightenment Society (GES).

The main motive of the meeting was to discuss the state government’s decision to form a committee to study the proposal for a Winter Capital in Tura. The groups said they are ready to continue their efforts until the goal is achieved.
Alden Marak, President of the Nokma Association, said the movement would continue with unity and without hatred. He shouted “Nokmas want,” and the crowd replied, “Winter Capital!”
Chibasal R. Marak, a lecturer from Loyola College, said the youth in Garo Hills struggle not because of a lack of will, but because of fewer opportunities. He said having a Winter Capital in Tura would help bring more development to the region.
Adv. Bernita Marak, Secretary of ASPF, urged everyone to stay prepared as the process moves forward.
