Shillong July 24: Nongpoh Legislator Mayralborn Syiem has expressed happiness over the inclusion of the Khasi language in Google Translate. He said it is a proud moment for the entire tribe that its language has been recognized by Google.
“It is a proud moment for all of us that we should be proud of, that our language has been recognized by Google Translate and this is one of the points that we could argue with the Central Government to pursue that it is high time that all the parameters (that) have been laid down by the Union Home Ministry with regard to the inclusion of different languages in our country. I am not wrong to say that all the parameters have been met with regard to the Khasi language and also subsequently the Garo language. They are trying to meet up with all the requirements and I hope that day will come very soon when they will be included in the Eighth Schedule,” he said.
It is worth mentioning that the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in 2018 unanimously passed a resolution asking the Centre to include Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. The two languages are understood, spoken, and used by over 23 lakh Khasi and Garo tribals and are considered associate official languages in the state.
Notably, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has repeatedly raised the issue of the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule with the Centre. He recently discussed the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to New Delhi.
