Nongpoh, Feb 19: The Nongpoh Town Shopping Complex has come under scrutiny allegedly as it has become hub of illicit activities such as alcohol consumption, drug use, and other unsavory behavior akin to that of a brothel.

Located in the quiet vicinity of Nongpoh, the complex has seemingly become a den for individuals taking advantage of its secluded nature and lack of guards presence.

The most affected areas include the parking lot and a selected floors, particularly those situated beneath the main market area, exacerbated by the absence of shops and tea stalls in the vicinity. The deteriorating conditions of the parking lot, with inadequate security measures, littered with bottles and garbage, and frequented by unruly individuals engaging in public urination, have transformed it into a foul-smelling dumping ground.

Furthermore, the third floor has reportedly transformed into what have been dubbed a “Lovers Paradise,” where couples engage in various illicit activities with impunity.

The issue came into light, following an inspection conducted by the Seng Hynniewtrep Youth Council- Ri-Bhoi District, on monday, accompanied by local news reporters.

In response, the council, led by Secretary Tony Shylla, promptly addressed the matter by submitting an information letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi District, urging swift action.

The HYC demanded comprehensive measures to address the situation, including the installation of CCTV cameras and the deployment of security personnel to ensure the safety of passersby and deter future occurrences of undesirable activities within the complex.
