Shillong, June 27: In a proud moment for Meghalaya, North Garo Hills district has been picked as one of the “best performing districts” for successfully implementing a Joint Action Plan (JAP) to prevent drug abuse and trafficking among children.
The district was chosen by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) as one of the top 30 districts, from among the 785 districts in the country.
“It’s a proud moment for the State and the Social Welfare department,” Commissioner and Secretary, Social Welfare department, Pravin Bakshi said. The official said the department is working tirelessly to fight drug abuse, especially among children, in the state.
“We wage a relentless, focused and determined battle against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. The district administration of North Garo Hills and District Child Protection Unit have achieved this feat in spite of all challenges. It is a big morale booster to all in the State,” Bakshi added.
The Joint Action plan (JAP) on “Prevention of Drug and Substance Abuse among Children and Illicit Trafficking” – “Ek Yudh Nashe Ke Virudh” is prepared jointly by NCPCR & Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and released in February, 2021. It is a framework to wean away children from drug abuse and stop sale of drugs near educational and child care institutions through convergent actions in a time bound manner.
Its objective is also to adopt a holistic approach to address the issue of use of drugs and substances amongst the children in the country. The District Magistrates are the nodal person for implementation of the JAP.
In the letter to North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, R. P. Marak, on the selection of the district as one of the 30 best performing in the country, NCPCR Member Secretary, Rupali Banerjee Singh said, “The Commission has selected “Best Performing” districts based on the successful implementation of Joint Action Plan on “Prevention of Drugs and Substance Abuse” among Children and Illicit Trafficking based on the indicators. The Commission is pleased to share with you that your district has been selected as one of the “Best Performing District”.
