Tura, April 29: Hundreds of people gathered in Rongara village on Tuesday to demand the establishment of a Winter Capital in Tura, West Garo Hills district.
The awareness campaign was organised by the A’chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) and saw participation from local residents, youth groups, elders and traditional leaders.

ACHIK President Macklawrence M. Sangma said that establishing a Winter Capital in Garo Hills represents a call for justice, recognition and equal development for the A’chik people.
“This movement is about securing our rightful place in Meghalaya’s governance and ensuring that no region is left behind,” he said.

Participants raised slogans in support of the Winter Capital demand, took part in a solidarity march and adopted community resolutions. Cultural performances and distribution of pamphlets helped spread awareness about the cause.
ACHIK urged the government to consider decentralising administration to ensure balanced development across the state.
