Shillong, July 4: The National People’s Party (NPP) is gearing up for a strong performance in the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, with party leader and cabinet minister Rakkam A Sangma expressing confidence in securing an absolute majority.
Speaking to media persons on Friday, Sangma ruled out the possibility of pre-poll alliances with other parties, stating, “Forget about like-minded, forget about coming to the coalition. NPP will work very hard to get an absolute majority in the GHADC.”

“Politics always has its dynamics and we expect a different outcome and different preparation. It is not easy for anybody. Definitely NPP as a party, we are on the job and we will be working hard. We are not taking any chances,” he said while responding to a query on the opposition’s preparation for the polls.
Sangma said his party will focus on highlighting its achievements in various sectors. He cited the state government under the leadership of chief minister Conrad K Sangma has been able to bring transformation in road communication, health, education, sports, agriculture to name a few to some extent.
“However, there is always room for improvement but we have proven to the people of the state and the people of Garo Hills. Look at the beautiful roads, playgrounds, many colleges, and school buildings. We have established all streams in all government schools. We have upgraded and given good college buildings. Let the people assess and measure the performance of this government,” he said while urging the voters to assess the government’s performance.
Asked, Sangma revealed that over hundred candidates have expressed interest in contesting from the NPP, with multiple aspirants vying for tickets in certain constituencies. He also dismissed claims of the party’s potential loss in the GHADC polls, citing the party’s hard work and dedication.
When asked if the GHADC polls would serve as a semi-final for the 2028 Assembly polls, Sangma noted that election outcomes can vary significantly, citing the recent Lok Sabha elections and the Gambegre by-election as examples.
“Look recently there was a huge margin won by the Congress in Garo Hills during the MP election but within a month’s time we had a bye election in Gambegre but the result overturned. So, from election to election it always changes,” he said while asserting that winning the GHADC polls would be a positive indicator for the party’s performance.
