Shillong, June 3: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma has assured that the government will ensure proper investigation to find out the truth while responding to queries on rape charges on an NPP MLA. He assured that there will be no influence or pressure from anywhere in any way to affect the investigation process.
At the same time, he said whatever has happened at a very personal level, and from the government’s side the only thing they can do is to allow the law to take its own course, as he refrained to comment any more on the sensational issue.
A woman on Tuesday (June 01, 2021) filed a complaint with the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills that NPP MLA Thomas A. Sangma had repeatedly raped her on the pretext of marriage at her home and at a hotel in Shillong.
“This is a very personal matter. I don’t see it as appropriate for us as government to respond to it. It’s something that has happened at the individual level and from our side the government, the only thing we can ensure and assure is that law will take its own course. We will ensure that proper investigation takes. We will ensure that truth comes out with proper investigation and that there is no influence or pressure from anywhere in any way to affect the investigation process,” Conrad said.
The sensational allegations have come at a time when the State and the entire country are battling the deadly pandemic of COVID-19. The issue has become a talking point across the board as it involves a sitting MLA from the ruling party.
Meanwhile, opposition Congress has latched on to the issue with East Shillong legislator, Ampareen Lyngdoh writing to the Speaker of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly asking for the NPP legislator’s removal from all the House Committees until the police investigation and trial, if any, are over.
However, Leader of Opposition and Congress leader, Dr. Mukul Sangma has refused to make a comment on the issue stating “let the law take its own course” as far as this case is concerned.
He has also insisted that this is something personal to the concerned MLA and the law of the land should be trusted.
NPP’s Meghalaya unit president and Rajya Sabha MP, WR Kharlukhi on Wednesday said the party MLA can’t be termed guilty simply based on an allegation levelled against him and the law will take its own course.
“This is an allegation… let the investigation continue … we can’t condemn a person just because there is an allegation. We believe that investigation should be there and let the law decide its own course,” he told a television channel.
