Shillong, Feb 24: The National People’s Party (NPP) is all set to form the new executive committee (EC) in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) even as it decided to introspect following the debacle in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) elections.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, NPP spokesperson HM Shangpliang informed that the leaders of the party would be sitting today evening to discuss the next course of action in as far as the JHADC is concerned
“We got about 13 seats out of 29 seats in JHADC election and definitely being the largest party with 13 seats, the NPP is gearing up and ready to form the EC along with few like minded partners who are willing to be part of the coalition,” he said.
Shangpliang said it will be a bit to early to preempt the partners that would be converging together or working together with NPP. “But definitely, from what I see, the MDA partners that are already in the government would also partner with NPP in the JHADC” he said.
“I would also like to thank the people of Jaintia Hills for the support and for the confidence that they have shown by giving 13 MDCs to the NPP” he added.
On the poor performance of the party in Khasi Hills region, Shangpliang said the it is a fact that the NPP had performed unexpectedly low by in the election to the KHADC by securing just 4 seats.
“In the KHADC, we have filled 25 candidates but we have only secured only 4 seats. There is a reason somewhere and we need to introspect and find out where things went wrong and the party would be sitting in the next coming days to review the performances of the party in every constituencies” said Shangpliang.
Shangpliang said that the NPP candidates have come second in many constituencies and this indicates that the party have not been wiped out completely.
“If there are lapses somewhere or there are drawback somewhere, we will try to find out and try to correct those issues wherever there are and we would like to serve the people” he said.
“We would like to respect the mandate of the people and we would like also to tell the people that the NPP is here to serve every section of the people. From the Party I would like to thank the people of every constituencies falling within the KHADC for their mandate” he added.
The party’s spokesperson said that NPP MDCs is ready to sit in the opposition along with other partners and would serve the people for the next few years in the District Council.
Shangpliang said that the result of the KHADC election is not a vote against the government.
“People would may be wanted a change in the District Councils but yes the party is in the government under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma and we will continue to serve the people even more better” he added.
