Agartala, September 12: In a special ceremony held at the state legislative assembly’s lobby this afternoon, newly elected legislators Bindu Debnath and Tafajjal Hossain were officially sworn in.
The oath of office was administered by Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen in the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, members of the cabinet, Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder, and senior officials.
After the swearing-in, Tafajjal Hossain, representing Boxanagar MLA, expressed his dedication to his constituency, stating, “I have taken the oath of office here to serve the people of my constituency. My goal is to make it the best constituency in the state. Development in the area had stagnated during the 25 years of leftist representation. The Chief Minister has assured us of full support in fulfilling the public’s aspirations, and I am committed to addressing vital issues like drinking water, road connectivity, healthcare, and public amenities during my 4.5-year tenure.”
Bindu Debnath, the MLA from Dhanpur, emphasized his commitment to public service, saying, “I have faithfully served in any political role assigned to me by the BJP, and now, as an elected public representative, I will continue to work diligently to fulfill the public’s aspirations in my area. My primary focus will be on education and improving road connectivity.”
He alleged that despite multiple terms in office under former CM Manik Sarkar, who has been elected repeatedly from Dhanpur, the area remained underdeveloped and the people were left behind.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha commented on the political landscape, saying that the BJP had 32 MLAs in the assembly following the 2023 general assembly elections, but with two more BJP MLAs adding to it, it will further strengthen the government.
Dr. Saha continued, “We now have 33 MLAs in the House, with the support of 34 MLAs, including one from our alliance partner IPFT. I am confident that the new legislators will play a pivotal role in the assembly, working diligently to fulfil the aspirations of the people who entrusted them with their faith.”
By-elections were necessitated due to the resignation of Union Minister of State for Social Empowerment and Justice, Pratima Bhoumik, from Dhanpur, where she had won, and the unfortunate passing of CPIM MLA Shamshul Haque from Boxanagar earlier this year.
Both Bindu Debnath and Tafajjal Hossain contested the by-elections with BJP tickets for Dhanpur and Boxanagar assembly constituencies, respectively, and emerged victorious.
Bindu Debnath secured 30,017 votes, winning by a margin of 18,871 votes over the CPIM candidate, who received 11,146 votes.
Tafajjal Hossain secured 34,146 votes in the Boxanagar constituency, clinching victory with a margin of 30,237 votes over his nearest CPIM contestant, who received 3,909 votes.
