Shillong, Nov 29: Petrol and diesel tankers under the banner of North East Petroleum Mazdoor Union (NEPMU) have called off their strike following meeting with officials of Meghalaya government.
The meeting was held at Nongpoh in Ri-Bhoi district as the representatives of NEPMU refused to come to Shillong for the meeting citing fear. The meeting was attended by government officials, Petroleum Marketing Companies and Petroleum owners along with NEPMU members at Nongpoh Circuit House in Nongpoh.
The NEPMU had decided to halt the supply of IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL petroleum products to Meghalaya starting from November 29, 2023 (Wednesday), alleging mistreatment of oil tanker drivers and helpers by Meghalaya Police personnel in Ri Bhoi district (commencing from 18th Mile) since November 24, under the pretext of malpractices. It also claimed that the oil tankers’ drivers and helpers were being physically tortured by police. Due to this, the union said the tankers are afraid to go to Meghalaya, particularly Khasi Hills region.
Speaking to reporters post the meeting, State Commissioner Secretary of Civil Supplies, Pravin Bakshi, expressed satisfaction with the meeting’s outcome, informing that various issues concerning the Mazdoor Union, drivers, and helpers were discussed extensively.
The Commissioner assured that the State government will provide support to the Union, including ensuring basic minimum wages, Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), and upholding statutory rights for its members.
Regarding allegations of mistreatment by the State police against some truck drivers and helpers, Commissioner Bakshi stated that necessary actions have been taken, urging the Police Department to facilitate smooth transportation without causing inconvenience to the drivers and helpers.
However, he refrained from providing more details regarding the alleged police involvement, citing an ongoing investigation into the matter.
A leader of the Mazdoor Union clarified that the Union did not even call for a strike, stating it is just a misunderstanding. However, following the meeting held on Wednesday, they intend to discuss the minutes of the meeting with supervisors at the Union Headquarters in Guwahati.
Furthermore, he reassured the public that there is no need to panic as it was just a misunderstanding, and all tankers are enroute to continue the supply of petroleum to Meghalaya.
