Tura, Nov 1: The sudden hike in prices of onion across the country has also impacted Tura, as the prices of the essential vegetable with the amount ranging from Rs. 70-90 per kg in the Tura market.
Though the prices are marginally less compared to Shillong where the prices are as high as Rs 100 per kg and expected to rise further, people in Tura have begun buying onion in huge quantities to ensure they are not affected if the prices shoot up in coming days.
The reason for this sudden price hike of onion seems to be the unavailability of the new produce, which is supposed to be available around this time of the year.
As the arrival of the fresh onion is delayed due to weather conditions affecting in its sowing and production, the current onion in the market is of the previous stock that is in limited supply, leading to the price hike.
As of now, the onion prices in Tura are hovering around Rs. 80-90 per kg mark but traders state that the prices will rise further as the stocks of new onion gets delayed.
