Shillong, Nov 13: As part of the ongoing ‘Operation Crackdown’, security forces apprehended two more suspected ULFA(I) linkmen in Upper Assam on Tuesday along with recovery of IEDs from multiple locations.
The joint operation was conducted by 23 Assam Rifles/ HQ 73 Mountain Brigade, Assam Police (NER/ER), Military Intelligence (Kolkata based), and 166 TA Battalion.
The arrests were made following coordinated intelligence-led searches that have been ongoing since October 25.
In Tuesday’s operation, two individuals with expertise in improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were detained, with two IEDs seized—one in Sonari, Charaideo district, and another in Sibsagar—both allegedly planted by ULFA(I) operatives.
Authorities suspect that ULFA(I) may have intended to deploy these IEDs during its upcoming ‘Protest Day’ on November 28, and potentially on Republic Day 2024.
The timing of the arrests is critical, as bye-elections are scheduled for five assembly constituencies on November 13.
Since the launch of Operation Crackdown, security forces have recovered a total of two IEDs, apprehended two active cadres, and detained 18 over-ground workers associated with ULFA(I).
The joint operation remains active, with security forces continuing to dismantle ULFA(I)’s network in Assam.
