Guwahati, April 30: The Divisional Forest Officer of the Mangaldai Wildlife Division has officially announced the temporary closure of Jeep and Elephant safaris at Orang National Park & Tiger Reserve. The closure will take effect from May 15, 2024, and will continue until further notice, impacting the tourist season for the year 2024-25.
Orang National Park, located on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River in the Darrang and Sonitpur districts of Assam, is a popular wildlife destination known for its rich biodiversity. The park has various flora and fauna, including the Royal Bengal Tiger, one-horned rhinoceros, pygmy hog, and many migratory birds.
The park closes during the monsoon season every year to allow the wildlife and their habitats to rejuvenate without human disturbance. The closure also helps protect the park’s infrastructure, such as roads and bridges, from damage caused by heavy rains and flooding.
Orang National Park, known as the mini Kaziranga because of its similar landscape and wildlife, is a pivotal habitat for the Indian one-horned rhinoceros and the Royal Bengal tiger. The park contributes significantly to India’s wildlife conservation efforts and plays a crucial role in the local and national tourism sectors.
