TURA, Oct 27: Several garo organizations have rejected last week’s results for 10 LDA posts in South West Garo Hills district alleging that outsiders benefitted the most from the selection. They accuse outside candidates of being given preference to locals despite a multitude of eligible candidates from the district applying for the same.
The controversy stems from the results declared on 17th October by the District Selection Committee of South West Garo Hills district for filling up ten Lower Divisional Assistants in various departments.
Three organizations, namely Garo Students Union of western zone (south), AHAM and NGCO have opposed the results and are demanding fresh recruitment to the posts.
Led by the GSU president of western zone (south) Megadeth M Marak, they met with Deputy commissioner R P Marak in Ampati to register their protest and demand for a fresh examination and interview for the posts.
“When the results for the 10 LDA posts were declared on 17th October it was outsiders who gained. The unreserved category did not follow the required meritorious preference. The selection violated the state government’s June 14th 2023 office memorandum,” says Megadeth Marak.
He alleged that as per the office memorandum, while selecting candidates for vacancies preference should be given for local candidates who are permanent residents of the district in which the vacancies occur.
“Specifically, in the case of Garo Hills- the combined reservation of 80 percent is meant to be available to the Garos in the absence of the Khasi-Jaintia community, ” the office memo clearly states. Despite multiple eligible candidates within the district the norms were violated,” said the student leader.
The three organizations are demanding that the government cancel the results, hold fresh exams and interviews and follow the office memorandum during the selection process.
They have warned of going to court to file a legal case and do not rule out protest over the issue.
