Shillong, Oct 17: In Meghalaya government’s continued effort to combat drug-trafficking in the state, a drug supplier was arrested with 1 kg of amphetamine, an illegal psychotropic substance, from East Jaintia Hills District on Tuesday.
Joseph Hmangaih Zuala from South Aizawl, Mizoram was arrested from a night super bus (AS 01 LC 6216) at Nongsning village along NH-6, district police chief Jagpal Singh Dhanoa said.
Further, after observing all legal provisions under NDPS Act in the presence of an independent witness and during the search a purple colour suitcase was found and on opening the said suit case, one plastic bag was found which contained a white crystalline substance.
The substance on weighing was found to be 1.017 kg and a preliminary test gave a positive result for amphetamine (crystal meth), which is an illegal psychotropic substance, he said.
The market value of the seized drug is estimated to be over Rs. 1.5 crore.
The SP said as per information available this is a transnational syndicate whereby raw material in shape of crystal meth is transported to neighbouring island countries and it is processed further into methamphetamine tablets. It’s a new network which has been busted.
A case has been registered at Khliehriat police station and further investigation is going on to unravel the entire network, he added.
Amphetamines are banned in India. They are listed as a psychotropic substance in Schedule I of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Act, 1985.
Amphetamines are stimulant drugs that increase dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain. They can be felt immediately when injected or smoked, or within 30 minutes when snorted or swallowed.
Amphetamines are illegal when used without a prescription to get high or improve performance. They are known as street or recreational drugs, and using them can lead to addiction.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma took to platform X to congratulate Meghalaya Police for the drug bust and assured that the state will not give a foothold to drug mafias in the State.
