Over ₹3500 Cr allocated for education, 750 digital libraries to be established

Shillong, Mar 5: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today said that over ₹3,654 Crore has been allocated for education sector in this year’s budget, which includes ₹2,770 Crore from the state resources.

“Of which, ₹1,403 Crore for grants-in-aid salaries to schools and ₹170 Crore for taking up capital works”, he said.

“In the new phase of supporting human capital project, about ₹ 150 Crore will be invested to improve school infrastructure. Renovations and new building construction in 37 senior secondary schools and construction of 4 DIET hostels will be taken up,” he added.

He also informed that the state has secured over ₹162 Crore for 750 digital libraries under a central scheme aimed at digital learning for the girl child.

“Meghalaya’s school administration ecosystem is a complex web with multiple types of schools with different governance models. A comprehensive exercise to identify schools with zero and single digit enrolment has been undertaken – 2,475 number of schools out of the total of 14,582 falls in this category,” he said.

He informed that the government is formulating a strategy to streamline the administration of government supported schools.

He also informed that under Mission Education, ₹326 Crore has been utilised in a phase wise upgradation, renovation and reconstruction work in 2044 government schools. “All balance works of first 3 phases will be completed and Phase IV of Mission Education will be launched in 2025-26. The focus of this phase will be to provide 100 % assured minimum facilities at all government schools”, he added.
