Tura, March 24: Palm Sunday was celebrated with religious fervour across the Garo Hills with devotees flocking to take part in processions held in Catholic churches while young children at Tura Baptist Church depicted the historic scenes of the entry of Lord Jesus Christ to Jerusalem.
Sunday began with Christians walking to church in the morning holding palm leaves to mark the religious event.
In the Catholic churches, particularly Tura Sacred Heart Shrine, the procession was led by a religious member holding a cross decked with palm leaves followed behind by hundreds of the faithful singing hymns and offering prayers.
Palm leaves brought over by devotees were sprinkled with holy water and blessed by the priests before the procession began and entry into the church for the service.
At the Tura Baptist Church, young children colorfully dressed in costumes depicting biblical times and holding palm leaves participated in a special event to mark Palm Sunday service.
Palm Sunday is a special day for Christians across the world marked by ceremonies and offer of prayers and solemn Masses to recall the New Testament account of the triumphant entry of Lord Jesus Christ into his beloved city of Jerusalem for the last time before his betrayal, suffering and death on the Cross.
It is also the start of the Holy Week that observes Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday to observe the Last Supper by Christ, crucifixion on the cross on Good Friday, and the triumphant resurrection of Lord Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.
