Panbari Forest reopens: A paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts returns

Must read

Guwahati, Feb 3: The enchanting Panbari Reserved Forest in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve has reopened visitors back to its lush landscapes and vibrant wildlife. Nestled within the Bokakhat Range of Assam, Panbari is a treasure trove of tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forest, renowned as one of the finest birding destinations in the region.

Home to nearly 300 species of birds, Panbari offers a symphony of chirps and melodies for visitors lucky enough to venture into its pristine ecosystem. Birding highlights include sightings of the dazzling Asian Fairy-bluebird, the majestic Great Indian Hornbill, and rarities like the Jerdon’s and Black Bazas. The forest is also a haven for butterfly lovers, boasting over 400 butterfly species. It was closed since 2009, briefly reopened in 2022, and then closed again and now is fully prepared to welcome visitors.

Panbari is not just for bird enthusiasts. Its diverse habitat shelters magnificent mammals such as the Indian elephant, Bengal tiger, clouded leopard, and Eastern Hoolock gibbon. With such abundant flora and fauna, visitors are guaranteed an immersive experience with nature.

Responding to growing interest in eco-tourism, Panbari now features specialized birding hides, or machans, offering unobtrusive viewing points where enthusiasts can photograph and observe birds without disturbing their habitat. The machan is nearly 20 ft high.

To streamline the experience, a new website allows visitors to pre-book birding sessions, explore detailed birding routes, and learn about key species found in the forest.

Essential Guidelines for Visitors

To protect the forest’s delicate ecosystem, several safety and operational protocols are in place:

Pre-booking: Mandatory at least one day in advance
Group Size: Limited to 3 vehicles and 12 persons per booking
Safety Measures: Each group must have two armed guards and one local guide
Designated Stops: Birders may only disembark at specific locations
Birding Hours: 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM

Entry is through Modarjuri Camp, with the exit at Panbari Beat Office, where a dedicated Birding Counter will manage operations.

Whether you’re an avid birder, wildlife photographer, or simply seeking peace in nature, Panbari offers a journey filled with wonder, discovery, and the beauty of life in the wild.
