Shillong, Sept 1: The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) has written to All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi, asking her to direct Congress national general secretary, Randeep Singh Surjewala to apologize for allegedly branding the local youth of the state as terrorists.

In the letter sent of Wednesday,  PDF general secretary Auspicious L. Mawphlang said, “The party would kindly request you to please take cognizance of this matter and the party also demands an immediate apology by your general secretary Mr. Randeep Singh Surjewala.”

Mawphlang said the party expresses its disapproval and disappointment regarding the ostentatious comments made by Surjewala on the current situation in the state.

“By dragging our state with the imbroglio in Afghanistan is utterly gross and unacceptable since we the Khasi-Jaintia people are peace loving communities and want nothing but the spirit of unity, harmony and brotherhood in our state,” he said.

What Surjewala had said

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi on August 18, 2021, All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary, Randeep Singh Surjewala had compared the miscreants brandishing rifles snatched from local cops and driving through the city of Shillong in a snatched police vehicle on August 15, 2021 to Taliban militants of Afghanistan.

Surjewala said, “Carrying black flags like Taliban, covering their face with black masks, militants brandishing guns were running from one corner of Shillong to another but no one stopped them. Meghalaya Chief Minister’s residence was attacked with petrol bombs. On the occasion of Independence Day, curfew had to be imposed for 98 hours in Shillong and internet services had to be suspended. The Home Minister has resigned. Despite all this, the Modi government is mum over the issue.”

He also stated that the carcade of Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik, which is the biggest representation of Indian government, was pelted with stones on August 17.
