Tura, Oct 7: Several organizations have come forward to collectively support the victims of large-scale flooding and multiple landslides in the Garo Hills region over the past three days, following torrential rainfall since Thursday. These groups are working to reach the affected areas and distribute relief materials to alleviate the suffering of the victims.
Chokpot constituency in South Garo Hills has been particularly devastated, with floods and landslides leaving many residents without shelter. The Dareng River, swollen by the heavy downpour, overflowed, submerging numerous homes and severely affecting 16 households in Chokpot.
Reports from Silki and Rambragre indicate that around 30 residents have been impacted by the floods, though communication challenges due to damaged networks and blocked roads have hindered further assessments.
In response to the crisis, a joint team including MLA Sengchim Sangma, BDO J.N. Sangma, local police officials, and the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) Chokpot Regional Unit set out to provide relief to the stranded residents on Saturday. The team distributed essential supplies to the victims, though road inaccessibility hindered their efforts in reaching some of the worst-hit areas.
Meanwhile, the GSU has appealed to the public to come forward and support ongoing relief efforts for the affected communities.
On Sunday, a similar flood relief initiative, led by the A’chik Asong Environment Enthusiast Society in collaboration with the Durama Motorsports Adventure Club, Royal Enfield Club, and local musicians from Tura, was carried out to assist flood-affected areas in the Garo Hills. Essential items were distributed to the victims as part of this relief program.
So far, 15 people have been confirmed dead and 5 severely injured in Garo Hills region due to floods and landslides.
