SHILLONG, MAY 1: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday said the government will ensure that law prevails in the state and that nobody is allowed to take law into their own hands. According to him, adequate measures have been taken to ensure there is no law and order breakdown in the state.

His statement came in the wake of the frequent petrol bomb attacks on police stations and government properties.

The latest being today’s three incidents of petrol bomb attacks on two police stations – Sadar PS and Rynjah PS, and MGCC office at Rilbong.

Speaking to reporters, Tynsong said, “We have already instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) and police force to be on the ground and make sure these things (arson attacks) do not happen in the near future.”

“We will not allow anybody to take the law into their own hands. Law will prevail and I have already instructed very clearly to the DGP and SPs to make sure that this kind of thing should not again reoccur,” he added.

Further, the Deputy Chief Minister however said he would not link the incidents of petrol bomb attacks with the recent arrests of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) members in the three murder cases at Ichamati and Mawlai Mawroh. According to him, law will take its own course.

“Let me tell you one thing I don’t say whether KSU members or not KSU members. When we arrest any person, you need to understand one thing we strictly follow from all angles, where, how and why, then ultimately investigation starts taking place and thereafter it will go to the court and let the court ultimately decide things. So my point here is very clear. I don’t say whether those people whom we have already picked up or already arrested belong from KSU or from other groups of people but let the law take its own course,” he said.

“Still I don’t believe that the petrol bomb happened because of the arrests of the members of so-called KSU. I am very sure that they also are very mature people,” Tynsong added while reiterating that “We will not allow these things to happen. Therefore, we will make sure that the law and order does not break down at all.”

Urging citizens to remain cool and calm, the deputy CM however said, “The government and the police are on the job to ensure people are safe and secured.”

“We will do it. We will make sure the people and public are safe so that they can go to the market and walk in the streets safely,” he further assured.

Whether the government will seek for additional forces, Tynsong said, “Right now, we are examining (in regards to additional forces) but as I said to you we will not sleep, we will make sure that the law is in order.”

Meanwhile, the deputy CM informed that an advisory has been issued to all departments and offices of the government to be cautious and make sure to park their vehicles in proper places.
