Shillong, Sept 22: A delegation from the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura Campus  has sought the intervention of the Governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar to end the institutional and financial crisis faced by the university.

A memorandum was also submitted to the Governor highlighting the campus’s dire situation, which has persisted for nearly three decades.

The union said that five academic departments lack permanent classrooms, forcing students and teachers to use makeshift arrangements. Basic amenities like clean drinking water, hostel facilities, laboratories, and transport services are scarce.

Recent budget cuts have brought the campus to the brink of collapse, halting faculty recruitment, promotions, and administrative procedures.

Students face significant challenges, including limited access to scholarly resources and uncertain futures. The self-financed Department of Master of Social Work (MSW) is particularly vulnerable, operating without permanent recognition and administrative backing.

The PGSU delegation urged the Governor to intervene and implement concrete actions to resolve the crisis. “We cannot jeopardize the academic future of thousands of students,” said PGSU Vice President Chakram D. Sangma. “This is not only an institutional matter but also a humanitarian one. Students are being denied the dignity and rights they deserve as members of a flagship university. This is a call to action toward stability, dignity, and a thriving educational environment for our campus community.”

The union emphasized that without urgent financial support and administrative reform, the campus risks losing its purpose and legacy.

“The crisis has already eroded the confidence of students, parents, and faculty. If left unaddressed, it could permanently damage the future of higher education in the Garo Hills region,” Sangma also stated.

He said that the PGSU hoped that through the intervention of the Governor, NEHU Tura Campus would be able to surmount its current problems and achieve its original mission of inclusive, accessible, and quality education for all.

“The union reaffirmed that this fight is not for privilege but for the elementary rights of students, teachers, and employees who have been overlooked for way too long,” the vice president added.
