Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking the lead role in the issue of global warming and climate change.

Speaking at the launch of Green Sohra plantation drive by Assam Rifles at Sohra (also known as Cherrapunji) in Meghalaya, Shah said, “Global warming and climate change has become a global crisis and in the fight against the crisis, PM Modi is taking the lead role by launching several schemes such as distributing free LPG gas supply to poor woman to decrease carbon footprint. Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been serious against this global crisis and taking a slew of measures to mitigate the problem.”

He recalled reading in textbooks about Cherrapunji getting the highest rainfall in the country. But cutting of trees has led to drastic decrease in rainfall in the area, which is a cause of concern.

“Due to cutting down of trees such things occurred. We have to take oath that we will transform Cherrapunji into highest rainfall centre in India. Our paramilitary forces have started the plantation drive to create a green environment and Assam Rifles has taken the lead in the plantation programme by planting 1.48 lakh saplings in Meghalaya area,” he said.

Shah also lauded the effort of PM Modi in providing clean drinking water to the people of India by launching Jal Jeevan Mission.

“Through this project every Indian should drink clean water. If the water which we drink is not clean then we will have several health problems. So, this Jal Jeevan Mission project will provide free clean drinking water to every citizen,” he said.
