Dibrugarh, Dec 30: On Friday, Dibrugarh police arrested three cow thieves and recovered eight bags containing 423 kg of beef meat from their hands.
Miraj Khan (50), Yunus Khan (46), and Imran Ali (30) alias Papu of Dibrugarh have been named as the accused.
“A squad of Dibrugarh Police, based on a secret intelligence, followed a vehicle coming from Chaolkhowa side carrying suspected beef meat illegally to supply at Loharpatty area of Dibrugarh,” stated Dibrugarh Additional Superintendent of Police (HQ) Bitul Chetia.
When the carrier vehicle was followed, it delivered three gunny bags of beef meat to the home of one Imran Hussain alias Motlib and another bag to Younis Khan, while the rest of the bags were transferred to another location, he added.
“We have apprehended the driver namely Imran Ali and seized four gunny bags of beef meat from his vehicle (AS06AC 5867). The team also apprehended Younis Khan and recovered one gunny bag of beef meat from his possession. Later, searched was conducted in the house of Imran Hussain alias Motlib and seized 3 more bags of beef meat. But Imran managed to fled from the place,” Chetia further informed.
He went on to state that the suspects were arrested with 8 bags holding 423 kilograms of meat, a car, and chopping knives. The police have also begun interrogation and have initiated a manhunt for catch Imran.
“We have arrested the three accused under Dibrugarh PS case. no. 797/22 u/s 353/34 IPC R/W Sec.13 Assam cattle Preservation Act, 2021,” Chetia added.
According to sources, the cattle thieves are lifting the livestock at night and transporting them to their hiding site for killing.
“They brought the beef meat to be consumed. Every day, cattles are slaughtered in their hiding spots, and the beef meat is then secretly sold to meet demand,” a source mentioned.
