Guwahati, Nov 4: In a significant crackdown on illegal animal trafficking, Assam Police rescued 19 dogs and arrested four individuals involved in the illegal dog smuggling trade.
The suspects were identified as Milik Marak, Ina Sangma, and Star Marak from Karbi Anglong, and Malu Sangma from Bhakatpara in Darrang district.
Acting on a tip-off, Panbari police in Mangaldoi launched an operation and discovered the dogs confined in sacks inside a locked room. Authorities arrested the four smugglers, who revealed their methods of capturing and transporting the animals, often placing stray and pet dogs in sacks, providing minimal food, and delivering them to buyers.
“We believe the smugglers intended to transport the dogs to Nagaland for sale. A case has been registered under Dhula PS Case No. 158/24, and the accused have been transferred to judicial custody,” said a police official.
Meanwhile, six other suspects involved in the operation remain at large.
Following the rescue, a local volunteer group arrived at the Panbari police station to assist in caring for the dogs. Despite lacking a dedicated shelter, the group quickly coordinated with several NGOs, including We Animal in Tezpur, Generosity Assam in Nalbari, and organizations in Guwahati, to arrange treatment and rehabilitation for the animals.
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of illegal dog smuggling in the region, prompting calls for stricter regulations and increased vigilance to prevent similar cases. Sources indicate a high demand for dog meat in Nagaland, where smugglers capture stray dogs and sell them.
