Police resort to tear gas as members of HITO try to storm into Meghalaya Secretariat

Must read

Shillong, September 04: In a major development, Meghalaya Police lobbed tear gas shells to disperse protestors, who had gathered in large numbers at the Post Office in Shillong.

This comes after the leaders of the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) were summoned by the City Police at Sadar PS on Monday for their black uniform, citing a violation of Section 171 CrPc, following which the members of the group had gathered near the SBI main branch to protest against the same.

However, as the police cordoned off HITO members at the SBI Main Office on GS Road to manage the crowd attempting to breach the Secretariat office, tear gas was employed by the police, leading HITO members to retaliate by hurling stones and bottles at the police.

Most shops remained closed, and GS Road toward Khyndailad wore a deserted look, as many feared the situation might escalate.

This is a developing story.
