Agartala, Dec 24: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has raised the alarm over Bangladesh’s growing electricity debt, revealing that the neighboring country owes ₹200 crore in unpaid dues. While no decision has been made to halt power supply, the situation is becoming increasingly precarious.
“Bangladesh has not paid us about ₹200 crore for supplying electricity. The outstanding amount is increasing every day. We hope they clear their dues so that the power supply is not disrupted,” Saha stated on Monday.
Tripura supplies 60-70 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh under an agreement between the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited and the Bangladesh Power Development Board, facilitated by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited.
“But I don’t know how long we will be able to continue the supply of electricity to Bangladesh if they don’t clear the dues,” the Chief Minister warned.
The issue comes amid broader concerns following the recent fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government in Bangladesh. Saha noted a significant decline in cross-border trade, with Tripura seeing reduced imports of key commodities like cement, stone chips, and the prized Hilsa fish. “Supply has been disrupted. It is their loss,” he remarked.
Tripura began supplying power to Bangladesh in March 2016, sourced from the ONGC Tripura Power Company’s gas-based power plant in Palatana. As tensions simmer over unpaid dues, the future of this cross-border energy collaboration hangs in the balance.
