Prasar Bharati and Assam Government to produce 52-episode series on legendary warrior Lachit Borphukan

Guwahati, April 12: Prasar Bharati in collaboration with Government of Assam will produce and telecast a TV series of 52 episodes on the legendary warrior Lachit Borphukan of the Ahom dynasty. The series will be broadcast across Prasar Bharati’s platforms, including Akashwani, Doordarshan, and its digital services, Prasar Bharati News Services (PBNS).

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in this regard was signed today between Smt. Meenakshi Das Nath, Director of Cultural Affairs, Government of Assam and Shri Amit Kumar, Deputy Director General (Content Sourcing) Prasar Bharati in the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Ms. Kanchan Prasad, Director General, Doordarshan. Other notable attendees included Shri Bimal Bora, Minister of Cultural Affairs, Government of Assam, Shri Ravi Kota, Chief Secretary of Assam, Shri B. Kalyan Chakravarthy, Principal Secretary, Cultural Affairs Department, Government of Assam and Shri Ankur Lahoty, Deputy Director, DDK, Guwahati.

Lachit Borphukan (24th November 1622 — 25th April 1672) was the famous General of the Royal Army of the Ahom Kingdom of Assam who defeated the Mughals and successfully halted the ever-expanding ambitions of the Mughals under Aurangzeb. Lachit Borphukan inspired the Assamese soldiers in the Battle of Saraighat fought in 1671, and delivered a crushing and humiliating defeat on the Mughals. The heroic fight of Lachit Borphukan and his army remains one of the most inspiring military feats of resistance in the history of our country.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that it is a historical day for the people of Assam, and it marks a significant milestone as the Government of Assam, for the first time has taken the initiative to produce a documentary in collaboration with Prasar Bharti on the legendary Lachit Borphukan. This documentary will be broadcast nationwide, showcasing the legacy of Lachit Borphukan to a wider audience.

He further requested the Prasar Bharati team to be sensitive in the portrayal of Lachit Borphukan’s life, emphasizing the importance of accuracy in representing Assam’s history and culture. He stressed that the documentary should be made in a way that honours the legacy of Lachit Borphukan without causing any harm to the sentiments of the people of Assam.

This series aims to delve into the life and exploits of Lachit Borphukan, shedding light on his strategic brilliance, unwavering courage, and enduring legacy.
