The development follows the resignation of State’s Rajya Sabha MP Dr WR Kharlukhi from the post of the state president owing to his old age.

Tynsong was appointed as NPP state president on Tuesday after NPP national president Conrad K Sangma accepted Kharlukhi’s resignation on Monday (October 30, 2023). His appointment ceremony was held at the party headquarters in Shillong amidst the presence of key party leaders and functionaries, including NPP Chief and Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.

Speaking on the occasion, Conrad said he has worked with Tynsong through many difficult situations and they both have overcome large number of challenges together. “I know his capacity, I know the kind of work he is capable of doing, and I am sure that he will be taking, from where Dr Kharlukhi has left, the mission of the party…,” he said.

In a statement released by the NPP, Conrad said, “In exercise of power conferred upon me as President of the National People’s Party under Article 11 of the Constitution of NPP, I am pleased to appoint Prestone Tynsong, as State President of Meghalaya State Unit until further orders with immediate effects.”

Later, taking to X, CM Conrad announced that Prestone Tynsong has taken charge over as President, Meghalaya State Unit of the National People’s Party on Tuesday from Dr. W R Kharlukhi.

CM Conrad also highlighted the service of Dr. W R Kharlukhi as the President of NPP.

CM also wished Prestone the best citing his faith in his leadership.

“Sh. Prestone with his years of experience in state politics will take this responsibility from Dr. Kharlukhi and further NPP’s reach and mission in Meghalaya and the North East. We have immense faith in his leadership and we wish him the best!” he added.
