Shillong, May 10: The independent inquiry ordered by the Meghalaya Government into the alleged irregularities in MeECL will also focus on power pilferage and special tariff to Byrnihat Industrial area.

Speaking to media on Monday, Power Minister James Sangma while welcoming the inquiry added that the inquiry will also give an opportunity to go into the details of working of MeCEL.

The inquiry will go into the roots of the alleged irregularities which have taken place and on instances, when procedures were not followed.

Sangma said that the independent inquiry to be headed by a retired judge will include terms of reference to inquiry into tendering process of centrally sponsored schemes like Saubhagya scheme, Smart meters and DDU-GKY apart from matters pertaining to nepotism, promotion and recruitment in the corporation.

The Government so far has not finalized the name who will head the inquiry and the terms of reference are being drafted.

The Power Minister also made it clear that the Government based on the outcome of the report will take action against any erring officials.

Last week, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had ordered for the independent inquiry which will be headed by a retired judge, who will be assisted by two members, including a retired government officer and another with technical background.

The government will give a specific timeframe, likely between four and six months, to complete the inquiry.

Earlier, the MeECL employees and the United Democratic Party (UDP), which is a key constituent of the state’s ruling alliance, had demanded an independent probe into alleged irregularities in the Corporation.
