Shillong, July 4: Chairperson of the Committee on Empowerment of Women (CEW), Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Santa Mary on Tuesday (July 2, 2024) met the victim who was publicly flogged in West Garo Hills recently.

The plight of the victim from lower Teksragre village, Damal Asim, came to be known after a video of the inhuman act went viral on the social media. Six persons have been arrested by the West Garo Hills police following a swift investigation and action.

Mary said the victim is currently lodged at the One Stop Centre in Tura, West Garo Hills. During her meeting with the victim, she found her health and mental condition improving with the support of caregivers at the shelter home.

The Chairperson also held a meeting with the Deputy Commissioners of West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills together with the Superintendents of Police of the two districts and other officials.

Issues relating to women and children covering several critical areas, such as crime and others were discussed during the meeting. The committee would also take up these matters with the government.

The committee found that there is a shortage of shelter homes in the state. There is also a need for professional health care services (physical and mental) in some of the shelter homes of the state.
